HSC Pictures of the Past Months

  • June 2016: A dwarf galaxy on the edge of the Local Group. Individual stars are nicely resolved and it demonstrates the excellent image quality of the HSC data.
  • July 2016: A nearly complete Einstein ring. The inset shows the image from SDSS. Note the superb image quality of the HSC data.
  • August 2016: An elliptical galaxy with blue spiral arms. The arms are not detected in GALEX, which may suggest that the accretion induced star formation is over.
  • September 2016:The comet Helin-Roman-Alu was serendipitiously observed on Oct. 10, 2015. The multiple cores are due to image coaddition - the comet is not being destroyed like Shoemaker-Levy 9!
  • October 2016: A collaboration meeting was held at Kavli IPMU, Kashiwa, Japan on August 22-26, 2016. We had a lot of productive discussions towards the first year papers.
  • November 2016: Galactic cirrus can be problematic for extragalactic studies, but it is interesting in its own right especially when observed at the depth and image quality of HSC.
  • December 2016: CR7 is one of the brightest Lyman alpha emitting galaxy known to date. This is a z-NB921-y pseudo-color image and the galaxy' strong Lyman alpha emission falls in the NB921 filter, making the galaxy look green.
  • January 2017: Galaxies grow progressively more massive through mergers. Mergers can be quite violent and multiple galaxies may merge at one time to form a massive galaxy.
  • February 2017: Group meeting at Princeron on 6-8 Feb. We had a lot of productive discussions on weak-lensing science.
  • April 2017: Galaxy clusters are the most massive systems in the Universe and distant galaxies behind the clusters can occationally be lensed. The superb image quality of HSC allows us to discover many lensed objects.
  • May 2015: HSC collaboration meeting in Sendai! We had a lot of productive discussions on our science results and future directions.
  • June 2017: A possible young globular cluster associated with the Saggitarius dwarf spheroidal galaxy (Carraro et al. 2007). This system is known to have a young age of ~5Gyr for a globular cluster.
  • July 2017: One of the strengths of our survey is that we observe the deep fields in narrow-bands. A narrow-band can pick emission lines from galaxies at specific redshifts, allowing us to study in detail where the star formation happens.
  • August 2017: Galaxy mergers are common events in the universe. Mergers may leave stellar tidal streams, which can be as complex as this one.
  • September 2017: The deepest image of the COSMOS field with 10-20 hours integration in the broad-bands. There is almost no empty space!
  • Low-mass galaxies tend to be star-forming galaxies. Emission lines from these galaxies can be extremely strong so that even the broad-band photometry is dominated by the emission line fluxes. A large number of such 'green peas' are being followed up spectroscopically.
  • November 2017: Palomar 3 is one of the most distant globular clusters around the Milky Way Galaxy. It is located at 90kpc from us.
  • December 2017: CHANEL galaxy. Galaxies normally have well-ordered shapes, but they get disturbed when they collide and merge. This merging galaxy resembles the logo of CHANEL.
  • January 2018: Interacting dwarf galaxies with active star formation likely triggered by the interaction. They are located roughly at 20Mpc and some prominent star forming regions can be identified with very blue colors.
  • March2018: Yet another interacting system of multiple galaxies. Massive galaxies may form in such a violent merger event in a very compact group of galaxies.
  • April 2018: Sumo Puff: Some of the nearby dwarf galaxies are known to be very diffuse. The nature of the diffuse galaxy in this image is unclear, but it may be an extreme case of such a diffuse galaxy.Details can be found in Greco et al. 2018, PASJ, 70, 19.
  • May 2018: The UltraDeep fields are observed repeatedly and are suited to search for moving objects. This is a blow-up of the COSMOS field. Although it is far away from the ecliptic plane, we identify many moving objects at the depth of HSC. The red bars are to guide the eye.
  • June 2018: HSC collaboration meeting in Princeton. We had lots of exciting science talks and simulating discussions! Stay tuned for our future papers!
  • July 2018: The S18A internal data release occurred. This release includes a number of new features in the processing pipeline. One of them is an improved background subtraction. Extended light around large objects is preserved very well as shown in this image.
  • August 2018: Jellyfish galaxy: the gas in this galaxy is being stripped off as it falls into a massive cluster due to the ram-pressure of the intracluster medium.
  • September 2018: The improved sky subtraction makes it possible to trace extended intracluster light, which is an important clue to the assembly history of clusters.
  • November 2018: Moving objects sometimes go unmasked and leave their footprints in the processed images. This one is likely 24224 Matthewdavis (1999 XU76) observed on 2017-02-02 just by chance.
  • January 2018: A galaxy with a surrounding ring is rate, but one with multiple rings are even rarer. This galaxy is in a dense cluster region and the rings are likely due to multiple interaction events.
  • March 2019: the Orion nebula observed in one of the engineering runs. Diffuse extends to the edge of this image and even beyond.
  • July 2019: galaxy-galaxy interactions often create tidal streams. They are often tails (curves streams). In rare cases, they can be a circle as seen here. This galaxy looks like a wrist watch.
  • April 2020: an interacting galaxy pair (NGC5713 and NGC5719). There is a diffuse, long-extending stream around the galaxy on the left, which is counter-rotating with respect to the main disk of the galaxy.
  • June 2020: Another revised image from the previous picture of the month. Thanks to the data acquired over the last years, the image now looks deeper. The inset image is the original discovery image from SDSS for comparison.
  • May 2020: A deeper view of KKR25, an isolated dwarf galaxy on the edge of the local group.
  • July 2020: As the previous HSC pictures of the months have shown, galaxy-galaxy interactions are a common event in the Universe. Interactions sometimes distort galaxies in an interesting way. HSC people call this galaxy a jelly fish galaxy.
  • august 2020: A nearby, massive galaxy cluster. You may be able to see the diffuse cirrus extending over the cluster. This is gaseous nebular in the Milky Way Galaxy and it reminds us that we are observing the distant Universe through our own Galaxy.
  • September 2020: The UltraDeep COSMOS field imaged for 5-10 hours with Subaru. The sky is filled with galaxies!
  • October 2020: yet another image from the previous picture of the month. The central galaxy has three rings around it. This is an extremely rare galaxy.
  • November 2020: NGC4517, a nearby edge-on disk galaxy located at 9Mpc from us. The galaxy on the top is a companion galaxy.
  • December 2020: a righ galaxy cluster located at 0.7 (approximately 6.5 billion years ago). The cluster is dominated by red galaxies and there are few blue (=star forming) galaxies.
  • January 2021: Eye of Horus. The central orange object is causing the gravitational lensing effect and distort the blue and red galaxies in the background simultaneously.
  • February 2021: A jellylfish galaxy. A massive galaxy cluster is filled with hot thermal plasma. When a galaxy falls into a cluster, the galaxy 'feels the wind' as it goes through the plasma and gas in the galaxy can be expelled out of it. The expelled gas form the jellyfish's legs in this image.
  • A unique component of HSC-SSP is a narrow-band survey of Deep and UltraDeep fields. A narrow-band filter is sensitive to emission lines at specific redshifts and it detected Halpha emission from the galaxy here located at z=0.24. The narrow-band image is in green and it nicely shows where the stars are being formed.
